INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Republicans are calling for a federal investigation into whether President Barack Obama got on the ballot illegally here in 2008.

The GOP wants to know who was responsible for alleged forged signatures on Obama’s petitions and those for Hillary Clinton.

State Republican Chairman Eric Holcomb sent a letter Friday to U.S. Attorney for Northern Indiana David Capp asking to open an investigation and to punish anyone responsible for submitting fraudulent petitions, 6News' Norman Cox reported.

The request is based on newspaper articles in South Bend reporting that hundreds of names were forged on petitions to put Obama and Clinton on the primary ballot in 2008.

"This fraud was obvious, far-reaching and appeared to be systemic," 22-year-old Ryan Nees told Fox News, referring to evidence he uncovered while researching electoral petitions from the 2008 Democratic Party primary in Indiana.

Nees’ investigation centered on the petitions that put then-senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton on the ballot. As many as 150 of the names and signatures, it is alleged, were faked. So many, in fact, that the numbers raise questions about whether Obama’s campaign had enough legitimate signatures to qualify for a spot on the ballot.

"What seems to have happened is that a variety of people in northern Indiana knew that this fraud occurred, and actively participated and perpetuated the fraud, and did so on behalf of two presidential campaigns," according to Nees.

Prosecutors are now investigating. The scandal has already led to the sudden resignation Monday night of Butch Morgan, chairman of the St. Joseph County Democratic Party. He denied any wrongdoing, saying he looks “forward to an investigation that will exonerate me."

I suppose that the county recorder was in on this two since the signatures would have to have been verified and deemed legitimate.

When Obama got elected I was surprised to say the very least. My first thought is there has to be fraud. I couldn't conceive of how enough people would vote for a guy who hadn't done anything was a community organizer and voted present. I couldn't believe that the extreme ideas he had could have found enough people who would vote him in. It didn't and still doesn't make sense.

well just maybe if your so called real news channels would cover it then that would make you feel better? Maybe Chris Matthews should look into this then, he is after all "unbiased". Or even Oberman. Sharpton?.

As you can tell from liberals comments there is no fraud and nothing there worth looking into so I suppose we should just drop it all and allow it to go but that is the liberal way deny everything and blame everyone but themselves.

Rather than questioning the source and dismissing it because of a tabloid's actions in the UK (rougy and Becks) I'd like to question the significance of this. I guess I might have to figure out what the process of getting onto the ballot in Indiana is but... forged or not... I don't see how Obama and/or Clinton would have not been on it regardless. So perhaps somebody cut a corner... or not... I don't think the outcome would have been any different considering the slant from the media. Is it worth investigating... sure maybe back in 2008... but it's been 3 years now and has 0 impact. So, tighten up for the next election and get it right.

The GOP wants to know who was responsible for alleged forged signatures on Obama’s petitions and those for Hillary Clinton.

See the question is not if this is true, but who is responsible. The first sign of a smear.

Secretary of State Charlie White issued a statement that he and his office will be on the lookout for any efforts to sidestep the rules by candidates hoping to run in the 2012 primary.

White himself is under indictment on seven felony charges, including voter fraud, in connection with his own race in 2010.

White’s trial is scheduled for January.

White is, of course (drum roll please) a Republican. Funny that was not included in a political article.

But, hey. in any case let's first find out if fraud actually occurred. I don't "know" one way of the other, but the first step in investigation is whether there was a crime before attaching any names to it.

I have a solution: Why not require fingerprints of each signee to the petition? This way we have an easy way of making sure they are legitimate signatures.

Interesting idea, but where would you compare fingerprints of upstanding citizens who have never been arrested or served in the military? Or are you suggesting a manditory national fingerprint database?

Well, with the number of crimes being committed out there; we should have that mandatory fingerprint database. But, I was thinking of comparing fingerprints on the form to each other. I doubt if someone were to forge signatures they would then hunt down multiple people to collect the required fingerprints.

Just use a Dynamo signature & finger printer from that label maker company. It randomizes the signatures and finger print patterns. You can find them in fine office supply stores in the forgery supplies section. /sarc.

Sooner or later folks we have to trust that 95% of stuff is OK.

Our crummy tax system is 100% voluntary pay, and it's far from perfect, bit it works.

Trusting a politician will never be easy, and as long as I have lived they haven't improved on their truth telling in my 75 years.

I don't expect they ever will!

Holcomb said it wasn't his intent to try to remove Obama from office, but he wants to know who was responsible and send them to jail.

    Unbelievable! Yet...it doesn't surprise me!

Full statement released by Morgan’s attorney:

"While Butch was considering various options until late this evening that included a “leave of absence,” he has concluded after conferring with state party that remaining on in any capacity would be an unwanted distraction for candidates in the upcoming city elections.

"Accordingly, he has just issued a formal letter of resignation tonight as both district chairman and county chairman.

"Butch Morgan has done nothing wrong and did not personally authorize, direct or condone the forgery or alteration of petition signatures.

"Furthermore, he intends to vigorously oppose any claim of wrongdoing but does not want this ongoing controversy to hurt the party that he cares so much about."

    Therese,

It is not on other news network because it is not a story. Allegations of voter fraud are brought up by other sides all the time and multiple states. So unless something actually goes of this, it is just another one of those allegations. If someone commits a crime, they should get in trouble, but not everything is a conspiracy.

Plus, Indiana's Secretary of State is already charged with 7 counts of voter fraud so you can't just say those on the left or Democrats commit voter fraud.

P.S. Why did you put "Catholic" as a topic? I am a Catholic and I don't understand how this has anything to do with it.

    Have a good day.

except these aren't votes. These are signatures for a candidate to get on a ballot, that an untrained 'investigator' has made a claim about. If the state validated these signatures then I would look to those local authorities to explain any discrepancies, I also look forward to the reaction from the right when he completes his 'investigation' into those signatures.
