Four years after propelling Barack Obama to White House, Iowa Democrats re-examine choice

On the eve of a new caucus, when voters will help decide the GOP nominee, Iowa Democrats reconsider their legacy.

ATLANTIC, Iowa -- Terry Mathisen’s face tightened at the name. “Barack Obama,” he said, shaking his head on his way out of a coffee shop in this outpost 80 miles west of Des Moines.

Newt Gingrich’s campaign bus pulled out of town a few minutes earlier and Mathisen, 61, could have easily blended in with the crowd of Republicans that showed up to see the candidate at a Coca-Cola bottling plant.

Mathisen, though, is a Democrat and supported Obama in 2008.

“I just wish I hadn’t of done it,” he lamented Saturday, explaining he thought the president overreached on healthcare and did not bring U.S. troops home soon enough from Iraq. “I’m not impressed with him,” he added, “but I’m not that dissatisfied.”

The conflicted feelings are evident across Iowa, which had a crucial role in putting Obama in the White House with his come-from-behind victory here four years ago.

The importance of this first-in-the-nation nominating contest is often overstated but on that night, in a state that is overwhelmingly white, a record turnout helped propel a black man to the presidency.

“They said this day would never come,” Obama proclaimed in Des Moines.

But on the eve of a new caucus, when voters will help determine the Republican to face Obama, Iowa Democrats are reassessing their legacy. They wonder if Obama was experienced enough and had the tenacity to confront America’s woes, or whether they should have attempted to mint the first female president.

Dear runner,

Yes, I have had many friends who have buyer's remorse and will not be voting for Pres Obama this time!

Thank you for the affirmation.

Barack said in the past day that voters were looking for someone inspirational. Yes, that's how he sees himself. I still recall a local rally organizer being asked why she supported him. Her reply? "I don't know -- he's so inspiring!"

Iowa's role in putting the President in the White House is no different than any other state or any other Americans. The President had to earn the trust of the people as a candidate and Iowa had nothing to do with that. Just because they are first in the nation, doesn't mean the rest of the nation follow their lead. Iowa is irrelevant and Iowans are full of themselves if they truly think their decision has a massive effect on the rest of our nation...

“I think he’s a smart man, but I don’t think he’s gained a whole lot,” said Dick Woodward, 62, in Atlantic.Woodward, a farmer and mail carrier, caucused for Obama because of his uplifting message of change. Despite his reservations about him now, Woodward said he will vote for Obama again, if only because he’s uninspired by the Republican candidates.

And what makes you think that *any* of the Iowa voters that voted for Obama in 2008 will *not* vote for him again in 2012? Or, god forbid, vote for whatever GOP clown manages to get the Republican nomination?

Dear JM

article in part and link

“There’s no question about it, it’s going to be an extremely tough election,” said Roxanne Conlin, a lawyer in Des Moines who co-chaired Edwards’ campaign in 2008.

She has felt the Obama sting herself, attributing her unsuccessful 2010 U.S. Senate bid to his sliding popularity. “It was a terrible Democratic year. The regret of Barack Obama was principally responsible for that.”

These comments pretty much state that it was a terrible Democratic year and Obama was prinicipally responsible for that.

Those comments just reflects one person's opinion, an opinion I and a lot of others in the nation, totally disagree with... Iowa will not decide the next election.... In fact when you closely examine the caucases record in Iowa, they have a losing record of picking a winner.. especially on the republican side of the asile.... Conduct your own research...

Dear MN,

I think this article is significant, I know of many who had once voted for Obama + now will not due to his own actions; they are the opposite of who he said he was.

Obama ran on the "I am not Bush" ticket, he would be transparent with his actions, we know he has not. This is just one part of this Obama Admin.

Add me to the list of people who voted for Obama and am now regretting that decision in spades. The hiring of this inept man has really shown the hind end of the democratic party. I have actually switched parties because of the horrible things I hear come out of the mouths of democrats. it is clear to me that the democrats are not in the least interested in all the people of this Nation just ones who follow their ideology. They have trashed conservatives relentlessly and unfairly and Obama has encouraged this behavior either outright or by simple indifference. This nation is being torn apart and I lay the blame directly on the shoulders of Obama ,he who wanted to bring all americans together and supposedly the president to all americans. He is a bold face liar , i have no respect left for him or anyone that pushes his hustle. Thats all he is....a street hustler that got the supposed smart democrats to buy his fake goods.

Really amazing how people come on here stating they voted for Obama and will not in 2012. You make those statements knowing full well, there is now way it can be verified if you are telling the truth or not. You just expect someone to believe you at your word. I for one do not. I conclude you are a bunch of anti Obama supporters who voted republican in the last election and think you have the power of persuasion.

I am a Obama supporter, I voted for him in 2008 and plan to do so again in 2012 and here are some of the reasons why he will continue to recieve my support http://3chicspolitico.com/president-obamas-accomplishments/

President Obama never said he was perfect, God or anything else. With republican opposition since day one, this President has made gains, a lesser person would not have a record so impressive. If you guys really think you are changing minds and hearts, continue to do so but just remember, it was the RNC who called their supporters reactionary not the DNC...

Here are some of his accomplishments within his first 100 days of office the average person was unaware of at the time....

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/29/obamas-first-100-days-10_n_192603.html

President Obama has an extensive record of achievements, sure he wasn't able to get everything he wanted during his first term, one can't accuse him of not trying and with congress enjoying such low approval ratings of 11%, it's obvious the majority of americans blame the legislative branch of government than the executive branch...

Politicoman,

LOL, I guess if you do not believe me that is your right, it does not mean you are right.

I have had communication with multiple people on NV and other social networks who have buyer's remorse for voting for Obama.

I am telling the truth about this, you choosing to not believe does not make it any less true.

One of the most significant reasons is Obama himself, they said he promised to be different and would pull US together as a country.

Obama has become the Divider in Chief, he has brought more divisive race issues than the last two presidents. He has called US names, enemies, terrorists and lazy.

Obama is the one who caused the Dem Shellacking for campaigning for Obamacare instead of working together for the economy. Obama then said he did not know how bad the economy was? This is abhorrant, Obama sold US as the man who could do the job...we now know he does not know what he is doing and does not know what to do.

The sign of a good leader is someone who can lead. LOL Obama has been a failure in his leadership of US, he likes the division, he likes to say that Congress will not work with him. What are we paying him for? To act like he is the only person who merits a job? NO, he does merit his job, he has 90 days on Golf alone? Gov Christi asked "what are we paying for"?

We need a Leader, not a Divider.

If Obama knew, he would have done it. If Obama knew, why isn't he do it?

I really don't care if any of you care if I believe you, you mean nothing to me,,, buyers remorse you say? Well that buyers remorse translated to over 25,000 people showing up in Iowa for the Democratic caucus in support of President Obama... That is statistical fact, so your so called Iowans with buyers remorse really doesn't mean a hill of beans... In fact I know a bunch of people who voted republican during the midterm elections who are now expressing buyers remorse with the entire republican party and have registered democratic for the next election...and these people are nation wide.... and I'll stay on my high horse for as long as I want...

Not to start a fight,, But !

The Iowa primary Dog and Pony by these GOP candidates has been just that. A Dog and Pony Show, which has been painful, (some will say gleeful) to watch.

None of them have a shot in Hel# outside of Iowa and a few other states to beat Mr. Obama.

This election will be a clear message to the GOP/TP from the American Middle Class!

Well ya see, being that there is no competition for BO and he's the only choice for the DNC there shouldn't be any bickering going on about their candidate. When there is only one choice, it's pretty hard to pick him apart....but it appears that his own party is starting to pick him apart. Wierd huh?

True Therese, the DNC candidates were pretty brutal on each other last election before the primary, how soon we forget.

Nope, he's the only choice for the Democrats. Heeellllewwww!!! You get to choose BHO or BHO. Lucky guess here.......you choose BHO. Not because he's qualified to lead, not because he knows how to take care of the United States, and especially not because he knows how to unite a divided Nation on both social and fiscal issues...because he's all you got. Which in my humble opinion isn't much.

I know, I know what comes next...........it's Bush's fault. Pffffffffft.

Iowa was the place that changed Barak Obamas political career in 2008. I can still recall reading about the many young Iowans who were inspired by Barak Obama and his message of change as the financial crisis was about to unfold.

There is one key sentence is this article which contrasts the present with 2008:

"Many new college graduates have struggled to find employment and face significant college loans. They have grown frustrated with the lack of action in Washington due to the partisanship Obama pledge to transcend."

This is the strong dose of reality which should sober those young impressionable minds.

    Dear MN,

Let me be clear, the one who likes to fight America is Obama. Obama has called US enemies, terrorists, + lazy! This is coming someone who has 90 days Golfing Alone in just 3 years. Not counting his vacations and campaigning for his Dems or Obamacare.

Like Gov Christie said to Obama "what are we paying for"? Any President who would spend $4 Million for a vacay when the medium income is $20,000 does not care for US or care.

Obama and his Dems like Pelosi are the 1%, the millionaires or billionaires, they made their money at our expense.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It's not about the legislation the GOP have passed but the legislation they have stopped. Look again at what they voted no to with an open mind. Do you really think that we have limitless money here? We don't. Guess who's funding it, hint it isn't the Government. They are not fighting the middle class, they are fighting for the middle class. What legislation has the GOP passed that stunts the middle class?

Sorry to present this bit of fact. The GOP wanted extending tax relief to the top 2% while adding in cuts to unemployment and other public services.

The GOP made it impassable and dam near hung U.S out to dry!.

The POUTS with the backing of the Middle Class said NO.

And the GOP/TP game plan is to F- things up and try to blame Obama.

We, the United States of America, lost our AAA rating because of the actions of the GOP/TPers.

For more that 30 years the GOP have taken America apart and they still blame others as they hide under $$$$$$.
